Ecoliteracy, Teaching & Training

Northeast cultivates functional ecoliteracy through its teaching and training initiative.

Kevin has presented his unique Building in Nature’s Image practitioner’s training, LEED and environmental rating systems, and building science to thousands of architects, engineers, designers, code officials, students and built environment professionals.  The trainings are customizable, from introductory presentations to intensive half- and full-day trainings.  AIA, RESNET and other continuing education credits typically are available for these Building in Nature’s Image trainings.

Building in Nature’s Image Training Description (PDF)

  • Building in Nature’s Image Trainings (holistic integration of Ecological Performance Standards, LEED for Homes, building science, and the NAHB Green Building Standard, based on our construsted projects as case studies).  Biomimicry, Resilience Theory, and Building Science are essential foundations of this training, presented in the context of environmental rating systems, existing codes, and governmental sustainable construction programs.  These run from 1.5 hours to full-day of intensive workshops that includes a simulated design charrette based on the Prerequisites and Credits of the LEED for Homes rating system.  This is a practical training that educates audiences in how to holistically integrate, design and build ecological performance & economic profitability into projects using the LEED portfolio of rating systems.
  • US Green Building Council 300 Level Courses in Green Home Design and Construction & Green Building Design and Construction. As LEED Faculty, Kevin provides and is available to conduct official USGBC educational offerings to your company, organization or group.  For more information, please see:  www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=1761
  • Builder, Architect, and Manufacturer Trainings. Northeast conducts both field and classroom training for builders, architects, and product manufacturers interested in integrating building science, biologically-inspired sustainability, and environmental rating systems into projects, designs and products. Kevin’s teaching experience includes:
    • Holistically optimizing building systems, thermal envelope, natural infrastructure site technologies, and building materials to optimize ecological and economic performance & returns on investment
    • Residential, mixed-use, and light-frame/specialty commercial construction
    • Sustainable & holistic designs and approaches to HVAC systems
    • Building science, including water management and durability, passive solar building envelopes and systems
    • Understanding and integrating environmental rating systems, including LEED for Homes, the LEED for Homes MidRise MultiFamily Pilot, and Architecture 2030 Challenge
    • Achieving Energy Star certification, the HERS framework, including available financial incentives
    • Proving performance and site verification of sustainable measures
  • Biomimicry Lectures. Kevin and Josh are Biomimicry Institute Alumni that lecture nationally on Biomimicry. The group has spoken at a diversity of venues and audiences, including the 2008 & 2009 Net Impact Conference, the Wharton School, Penn State, as the University of Kansas Sutton lecturers, the Presidio School of Management, and Cornell University.
